Dental sealants protect teeth from tooth decay by filling the fissures and grooves that are hard to clean during brushing and flossing.
Sealants are a thin plastic coating which is painted on the chewing surfaces of the teeth (usually the molars) to prevent tooth decay. The material bonds to the depressions and grooves of the teeth forming a shield of enamel on each tooth. Anyone can benefit from this treatment, and it is particularly successful for preventing tooth decay in children and teenagers.
This is a quick and painless treatment and is completed in a single dental appointment by any of our Perth dentists. The process involves:
- Teeth are thoroughly cleaned and dried.
- An acidic solution is applied to the chewing surfaces of the teeth to roughen teeth in preparation for bonding.
- Sealant is then painted onto the tooth enamel, where it bonds directly to the tooth and hardens.
- A curing light is used to help the sealant harden.
If maintained properly, sealants can protect teeth from decay for up to 10 years. Regular visits to the dentists are required to check for chipping or wearing.
